Relay For Life is the signature fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, started by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma, Washington who ran around a track for 24 hours to raise funds and awareness for cancer, back in 1985. Today, Relay For Life can be found in over 5,000 communities across America, as well as over 20 countries.
Our Relay For Life of Grayslake & Round Lake Areas started back in 2001 and has since raised over $1,377,000 for the American Cancer Society, providing funding for cancer research and patient support. Our Relay For Life event of 2014 will be held at Round Lake High School’s football field on July 19-20 from 6pm to 6am. Hundreds of community members, cancer survivors, and caregivers will come out in teams of businesses, families, and friends to camp out around our track and fight for a world with more birthdays. The premise of the overnight event is that cancer never sleeps, and for the night, neither do we. It’s requested that one person from each team remains walking on the track all night to truly represent this concept.
Throughout the night, we have meaningful ceremonies, fantastic live entertainment, and engaging activities. Last year, we had Joe Cicero from the Star 105.5 Morning Show speak, WRLR on site, live bands, a survivor dinner, frozen t-shirt contest, workshops from Home Depot, a silent auction, a midnight birthday party (with cake!), tons of free food, and onsite fundraisers by each team, as well as opportunities to illustrate how we celebrate, remember, and fight back, just to highlight a few great points. This year, we’re gearing up for our best year yet and we would love for you to join our cause and help spread the word in any way possible.
